Awhile back I picked up a domain name that had expired called UltimateSEO.org its Domain Authority is a respectable 36.  Some companies work years to build up to that level and its branding isn’t that bad either.  SEO is in the name afterall.  MatthewLeffler.com could just as easily belong to the other Matthew Leffler’s that I constantly fight against to rank highest on Google.  Be it the lawyer, the tennis pro or even the sex offender in Florida.  (Shame on you for dragging our name down)

MatthewLeffler.com is a DA23 which is respectable for less than a year old but I can skip a year or so of work if I jump into the new site’s shoes.

I keep a bunch of niche domains going, if you haven’t picked up on my website bonanza.  I think though they are complementary but separate and thats why there are a few.

So that leaves my personal sites, a little more personal.  And if you are interested in SEO, Cloud or Data then ya got a site on that niche. I will say though Data I kinda neglected and wrapped up into Cloud502.com SEO is the actual thing I enjoy, its just figuring out data and easier if ya can use cloud computing.

WordPress 5 Upgrade: Why I Broke My Site With It

Gutenberg sounds like the place that a hard fought battle took place in Europe maybe during the “Great Wars” or during the Middle Ages but Gutenberg is not connected to history its the name given to the new WordPress editor that WordPress 5 brings to the blogosphere. 

I fully expected and was prepared to backup before upgrading, I have multiple sites so I had tested the upgrade on other sites.  I figure though the best way to fix something is to break it first so I went ahead with it and upgraded https://matthewleffler.com to the newest and greatest and YES … it broke a lot of stuff.  I’m using it now to post, and I can add stuff to the site, I just cant really edit anything like the homepage or any post or page made with the previous editor I used.

I suspect Gutenberg will allow you to edit previous classic editor pages and posts with no fuss, but if you use a 3rd party plugin builder I’d recommend caution.  Sometimes when I entered a page I made in a third party page builder it would show in classic form as the familar collection of short codes and strings of letters that arent even in html or css or php for that matter.  Its not the 11th hour here, I just suspect the association between the 3rd party builder and building pages has been severed.  

I expect that a reinstall of the builder or an update from the builder will resolve this issue. Now some of you may be in trouble though.  What if your builder came with the theme you may have purchased?  As in you didnt purchase the builder…if you have been able to update it then I’d hope you’re headed for smooth calm waters, but of the themes I own thats not the case with any one of them.  Gutenberg therefore may be headed to breaking all the themes we’ve gone out and bought.

Now Gutenberg is associated with a battle.  I personally didnt like it in WordPress 4.  My reasons are that as they add features in a sandbox play pen I cant seem to break out of the play pen and do the actual coding I know.  Its been my main distaste for Divi and any builder.  They make it easier by making it less accessible.

So backup your site.

If you used a third party builder proceed with caution or wait for updates from your builder’s builder. 🙂 

And if you knew html and css and built your site in the classic browser you’re good to go!   

I am going to be able to get out of having to update my homepage for bit. :-). Thanks Gutenberg.  I’m not the only one who is a detractor of this editor.  Most of you all are too.  The WordPress plugin rating is pretty damning.

Should You Go After That Keyword

Determining When You Have A Chance At A Keyword

So as I was reading for fun I stunbled across an often cited and well referenced Neil Patel article.  So this isn’t my work but I wanted to share the excerpt from his much bigger article on how long it takes to rank.

6. Decide which keywords you should win before building out content based on those keywords.

Some content marketers set out to win ranking for a given keyword, without doing their due diligence on that keyword.

This can be a mistake.

Why? According to our data, websites that sought rank for a given keyword had difficulty ousting a competitor site that had a similar link profile.

Let’s say we have two websites, yours and Mr. Competitor.

Mr. Competitor already ranks in the number one position for “top 10 types of grass to feed your zebra.”

Should you try to rank for this keyword as well?

Yes. Your sites are equal and you have a fighting chance.

But, should you compete for the term “zebra?”

Probably not.

Why not? Because the websites that rank first in the SERPs for this term have a DR that exceeds yours by a considerable margin.

How should you know whether or not to pursue ranking for a certain keyword?

There’s a simple method. It’s the “If they can rank, I can rank” method.

Look at your competitors and ask yourself the following questions:

    1. Are they in the same niche? If yes, proceed to question 2.

    2. Do they rank for your chosen keyword? If yes, proceed to question 3.

    3. Is their domain rating within 5 points of mine? If yes, then you are on a firm competitive footing.

So there is a good take away in that piece. He is referencing Domain Rank which is similar but a different metric than Moz Domain Authority but both attempt to predict how well your content will rank. And thats the take away I wanted to make…pick a keyword or phrase you want. Find out what your Domain Authority is or Domain Rank and if your site is a DA 19 and you want to out rank a site on the same keyword that is a Domain Authority 66 … you need to focus on building your Domain Authority because its gonna be hard to reach that top spot.

Publish Content Often

Another take away which I use already … if you want to rank for a keyword don’t rely on old content to do it.

Web content is NOT like cheese or wine. Think of content as a jello mold at a picnic, the longer it’s out the less likely anyone is going to take a bite, unless encouraged by others. Those encouragements are the backlinks of other sites. So if you want to rank for keyword x and you wrote this content 2 months ago and no one linked to it…you need to move on from that content and post something new thats still relevant. It’s also going to help you in the long run, if your site has 20 articles on say Nuclear Propulsion you’re going to be seen as more of an authority than someone who has 3 articles.

Keep in mind that when you post your first article on a topic seeking that top spot…you’re likely that site that has 3 articles wondering why you aren’t out ranking someone who has published many times more content on the topic.  You’re going to have to put your time in and build your authority.

The easiest way to allow someone else to administer your Google Adwords campaigns is likely to add them as an Admin to your existing account. This allows you to own the campaigns and keep the records long after the user has ended their work on your project. It also leaves you still in charge of the budget and keeps you in an oversight role of your campaign.

to add an Admin to Adwords.

Step One. In Adwords click the wrench, labeled “TOOLS” you’ll be able to then select “Account Access”

From the Account Access screen click the blue circle with the plus in it on the left-hand side of the page. A lightbox opens with four options.
To add an Admin who will be able to manage the accounts campaign you will likely need to select “Standard”
This gives them access to the make changes to the campaigns but doesn’t allow them to manage who has access to the account, that stays with you.

Common Metrics

As a general rule of thumb these are the metrics people consider good.

CTR = Click Through Rate = 2%
Video View Rate = 15%
CPC = Cost Per Click and CPI = Cost Per Interaction are variable and what is good depends on the product or service you are engaged in…

Remember that your Ads are ranked for quality 1-10 10 being the best quality. The higher that number the less you will have to pay to present your ad. It makes sense, if someone has a good highly effective ad and another person wants to show their low-quality ad more they have to pay a premium. You either need quality or more money to get your message out. If you have both then watch the Impression Share metric. This number tells you how much of the supply you are taking advantage of for your keywords. Obviously if you have a high-quality ad, that doesn’t cost a lot you’ll want to run that even more often. If someone else has a low-quality ad they’ll have to pay for the right to push you down on the page.

Friendly advice

You should make lots of ads for the same keywords, Google will find which gets the best reaction and show it more and more.
Use negative keywords. Its actually almost more important to know what you don’t want to advertise towards as it is to know what you do. Common negative keywords for almost any Adwords campaign include:

Top SEO Tools I Use: MonitorBacklinks.com

Series of posts over the next few months to say what I’ve found works and what doesn’t in SEO.  So this is installment 1 in Top SEO Tools I Use.

So this is somewhat of a product endorsement piece but its also worth sharing with others what you’ve found useful and hopefully they’ll let you know what they have found useful. So Tools I use and even a few I don’t and why.

No the first tool has NOTHING to do with keywords but more importantly everything to do with deciding what your keywords are … if you think my life revolves around keywords you really need to catch up.  Backlinks and anchor text are the hardest things to control and often the most impactful.  Consider….back in the 2000s Miserable Failure was backlinked to George W Bush’s White House biography page by so many websites that he ranked number one on Google for Miserable Failure.  Now I guarantee his site had NO SEO or optimization for Miserable Failure but he held that spot until a counter wave of links went to Jimmy Carter.   Then Google manually shut the term war off.  Its backlinks that make or break a sites ranking.

You can optimize all day long on content choices and keywords but if the rest of the world doesn’t think you are that in their links neither will Google.  So the product is essential.  It trends your links and competitors and its just $25 a month.  Here are screenshots I have taken from time to time to include in reports to clients.monitorbacklinks.com

Notice the colored circles at the top break down the links and provide you with metric like CF TF and DA.  Below that image you can see link by link and the strength of each link as well as no follow or follow status.

Below are more links since the site added more features.  Under the status column the G shows if its indexed by Google with green as good and indexed, yellow as not indexed but not out right banned and finally red … the worst link and honestly its like being caught hanging out with the wrong crowd.  Google even allows you to “disavow” the red Gs.

ZF takes 35 percent stake in autonomous driving specialist ASAP

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Car parts maker ZF Friedrichshafen said on Friday it acquired a 35 percent stake in ASAP, a Germany-based maker of software and testing systems for autonomous driving applications and electric vehicles.

ASAP specializes in car-to-x communication, human-machine interfaces and electronic architecture and last year generated sales of 84 million euros. It employs 1,100 staff.

ZF’s Chief Executive Officer Wolf-Henning Scheider recently said ZF will invest about 12 billion euros in electromobility and autonomous driving over the next five years.

A purchase price for the ASAP stake was not disclosed.

Comcast says its fastest internet reaches more U.S. homes than any other provider

(Reuters) – Comcast Corp said on Thursday that its fastest-speed gigabit internet service now reaches more homes than any other provider in the United States after it completed rollout to nearly all 58 million homes and businesses it serves.

The milestone widens its greater coverage over telecoms rivals. Competitor Verizon Communications Inc races to deploy its next-generation 5G wireless service on mobile phones and in the home with speeds theoretically rivaling cable company products. Verizon launched its home internet 5G service in October, the first commercial offering of its kind in the United States.

Comcast’s high-speed internet business is one of its biggest contributors to revenue and profit as customers for its video services decline. The segment has helped prop up the media and communications conglomerate’s finances.

So-called cord cutters, many of whom continue to rely on broadband providers such as Comcast for internet services, have started defecting to video-streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Youtube TV for television programming.

That trend sparked a wave of media company mergers. Walt Disney Co struck a deal to buy 21st Century Fox for $71.3 billion and AT&T Inc bought Time Warner for $85 billion, and both have vowed to build streaming video services for consumers looking for a lower-cost alternative to traditional pay television services.

Comcast lost to Disney on a bid to buy Fox this year but prevailed against Disney in an auction to buy satellite television broadcaster and media company Sky.

Robot market growth slows as trade war hits industrial spending: robot industry chief

TOKYO (Reuters) – An escalating trade war between the United States and China has dampened manufacturers’ appetite for investment in equipment, causing growth in the industrial robot market to slow, the chief of the global robot industry group said.

Many global manufacturers “are now in a wait-and-see mode, wondering whether to shift production (away from China) to, let’s say, Vietnam or the United States,” said Junji Tsuda, chief of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), in an interview on Thursday.

IFR, which brings together nearly 60 global robot suppliers and integrators, predicts worldwide industrial robot sales this year to grow 10 percent compared to last year’s 30 percent jump.

China is the world’s largest robots market with a 36 percent global share, with its sales volume exceeding the total of Europe and the Americas combined.

Tsuda, also the chairman of Japan’s Yaskawa Electric Corp, said the manufacturers would move out of the wait-and-see mode by the end of this year.

It will take a while for the direction of the trade war to be clear, Tsuda said. “But global demand for smartphones, semiconductors and autos have been solid, and the time will eventually come that they can wait no longer and will resume investment to meet the demand.”

Yaskawa, one of the world’s top robot manufacturers, last week cut its annual operating profit forecast to 59 billion yen ($524.40 million) from 65.5 billion yen, citing a slowdown in smartphone-related demand in China and growing caution over the trade dispute.

From next year onwards, however, IFR expects the robot market growth to pick up again, forecasting an average 14 percent increase per year through 2021.
